Baby led weaning omelettes

When I was on maternity leave, I loved having omelettes for my lunch. Quick to prepare and low in calories, they’re the perfect lunch for busy mums and when you can share them with baby – even better!

Both of my babies have loved having omelettes as part of a healthy and balanced diet. Omelettes are another of my baby led weaning recipe staples alongside pancakes and fritters that I love to make at least weekly as they are so versatile!

What are the benefits of offering eggs to your baby?

In the past we have been told not to offer eggs to babies or to reduce our consumption of them as an adult. In recent years this advice has changed and eggs can be enjoyed by everyone on a daily basis as part of a healthy and balanced diet. (Please seek guidance from your doctor or paediatrician if you are unsure or allergies run in your family)

Eggs come with numerous health benefits:

  • Excellent source of iron – needed for good health and development
  • Nutritious source of protein – used to repair tissues
  • Contain healthy fat – much needed to keep up with the amount of energy they are using
  • Good source of Vitamin A – important for a healthy immune system
  • Good source of Vitamin D – helps to absorb calcium and phosphates
  • Contains Vitamin E – a powerful antioxidant
  • Contains Vitamin B12 – supports brain development and produces healthy red blood cells

I thought eggs were a no go when weaning?

According to the NHS (correct as of December 2021), babies can have eggs from six months old – however this does come with some caveats.

You should make sure the eggs are stamped with a red lion or ‘British Lion Quality’ (in the UK). If they’re not – this means the eggs need to be fully cooked. You should also make sure the eggs are in date and that if there is any history of allergies you consult your doctor or health visitor first.

How do you make baby led weaning omelette?

To begin, I heat a frying pan on the hob on low heat with a little oil – you can switch this for butter or spray. I also preheated the grill.

Next, I crack three eggs into a bowl and whisk them with a fork until the whites and yolks were combined. I also add a little pepper and basil for taste. (I am a big fan of using herbs and spices in cooking, even for baby led weaning recipes)

I grated around 30 grams of cheese and add half of it to the egg mixture before pouring it into the pan.

It cooks in the pan for 2-3 minutes, until the edges start browning. Then I put the rest of the cheese on top and bung it under the grill for three minutes.

How do you serve baby led weaning omelette?

I usually cut the baby led weaning omelette into strips and put it on baby’s high chair for him to eat. The strips are easy for a baby as young as six months to hold and bring to their mouth.

As babies get older and turn into toddlers, I give bigger pieces and offer it with some cutlery.

My baby is 7 months and doesn’t have any teeth yet. She seems to choke on each strip of omelette she puts in her mouth. Am I doing it right? Shouldn’t I cut it up into much smaller pieces in case she chokes on a strip? Or wait till she has teeth so she can chew it into smaller size pieces that are easier to swallow .
