Craft // Baby Finger Painting

I’m not the most crafty of people. In truth, I just don’t have the patience for it and I don’t like mess. Just because I feel that way though, doesn’t mean I want Dex to grow up without doing lots of craft activities. It’s a great sensory experience for babies and a fab way for children to learn how to use their hands. Baby finger painting is a perfect example of this.

We haven’t attempted may craft activities with Dex yet, but one that we do regularly and is a firm favourite is baby finger painting. Now, I know what you’re think…What about the mess?! Well, the way we do it, there is zero mess and absolutely no danger of baby eating the paint which means you can try this activity as soon as baby is ready for some tummy time and is able to stretch his arms out.

For mess free baby finger painting all you need is:

  • A few bottles of paint in different colours.
  • An A4 sheet of paper.
  • A plastic wallet .(I call these poly-pockets)
  • Sellotape.
  • One not so grumpy baby.

On a piece of paper, splatter a few drops of different coloured paint. I used red, blue, green, white and yellow. Carefully slide the paper into a plastic wallet and tape it securely either to the floor if you’re doing it as a tummy time activity, or to the high chair if you’re doing it as a sitting down activity.Once it’s secure, let baby at it!

The paint can be manipulated by tiny figures through the plastic wallet to make a beautiful piece of finger paint art without the mess! This activity was especially good when Dex was four or five months old and EVERYTHING was going in his mouth. I had no fears that he would inadvertently eat the paint and it kept him occupied for a few minutes on the floor while I cooked/cleaned/ironed.

Let me know if you give it a go!

This looks great! Far less messy than my attempt which was without the plastic wallet! Needless to say a full bath was needed afterwards! #HumpDayLinky
