Having a baby can be a total shock to the system. I’m not just talking about the fact that you now have this tiny human who depends on you for their every single need, although this is a pretty tough transition. I’m talking about the lack of attention you get now that you are a Mum. When you are pregnant, people cannot do enough for you. Strangers talk to you in the street, people lavish their attention on you at all times; offer their seats, carry your luggage, run around getting you food for your cravings; then, all of a sudden, when there is a newborn baby in the room alongside you, it’s as if you never even existed.
It’s tough. You have been through a traumatic event and need time to heal, sleep and relax, and yet, there’s no time to sleep, no time to relax and all the gifts you receive are for the baby who has WAY more stuff than they could ever possibly need. Which is why I’m advocating presents for new Mums. Do you know someone who is due any day now? Forget about taking round a personalised blanket or a cute little baby grow. Trust me, this new Mum will have tons of those and they will get lost into the mountain of baby things that never even get opened. Instead, take along a present for the Mum, something she will use. She will more than thank you for thinking of her and it will be a gesture that’s remembered for the rest of time.
I’ve created a gift guide perfect for new Mums. It’s all the stuff I wish I’d been given when I was a new Mum and a reminder of the list I’ll be handing my husband next time I give birth to his child.
‘Think Happy Thoughts’ Mug by White Stuff. We hear so often about new Mums not getting a hot cup of tea. Give her this beautiful mug along with a note to her other half saying ‘Make sure you fill this before trotting off to work!’ It’s important for new Mums to keep their fluids up, especially if breastfeeding!
Gift Cards by John Lewis. Gift cards are so handy and John Lewis ones especially so because the new Mum in your life can pick whether she wants to spend it on herself (doubtful!) or her new baby. John Lewis have such an amazing stock of baby stuff from bottles to prams to toys and clothes.
Luxury Chocolate Gifts by Flowers Buy Delivery. In those first few weeks of being a new Mum you don’t have much of an appetite, but trust me there us always room for chocolate. These are especially handy if you don’t live nearby, chocolate arriving with the postman- it’s the dream!
Netflix Gift Card by Tesco. A Netflix subscription is an absolute must in the first few weeks of a newborn’s life. There are so many box sets a new Mum can get her teeth into while baby sleeps or feeds and she shouldn’t feel guilty about it in the slightest!
Red Roses Bath Oil by Jo Malone. For a long time, the only alone time a new Mum can get is by having a bath in the evenings once Daddy is home from work. Purchase this lucuious bath oil as a special treat to make those baths even more relaxing.
Flowers by Appleyard Flowers. Who doesn’t love flowers? When Dexter was born, I was so happy everytime someone brought me a new bouquet, they make the place look semi-decent considering the lack of cleaning and tidying that gets done when baby is tiny.
More Than Moisture Gift Set by Clinique. I love Clinique and this gift set will make any new Mum feel semi human again. probably in the first few weeks, the new Mum in your life won’t feel like putting any make up on or doing her hair, but having some lovely moisturiser to use will make her feel 100% better.
What presents do you wish you’d been given as a new Mum?
