We all dream of winning the lottery but for most of us it’s a wild pipe dream. Still, the excitement of buying a ticket and waiting in eager anticipation for the numbers to be drawn keeps us buying our tickets every week. If only we knew how to select the winning numbers! If only the winning numbers could come to us in a dream!
For some lottery winners, this is exactly what happened.
When Pearlie Smith of Trenton, New Jersey, won a $429.6 million Powerball jackpot prize in May 2016, she claimed that the winning numbers came to her in a dream. “Divine intervention gave us the numbers,” said one of Smith’s eight adult children. “No birthdays, no anniversary dates,” she added, referring to how her mother had chosen the numbers on her ticket.
The winning numbers in the draw were 5-25-26-44-66 and the Powerball number was 9. After Smith took the cash option, her pay check was $204,408,000 after the deduction of taxes. Not a bad return for her $6 investment.
That’s not the only time a lottery winner credited a dream for winning a jackpot. Rebecca T. of Indiana won $1,000,000 on a Powerball ticket in 2017. Her adult daughter said the numbers 1-21-31-41-59 came to her in a dream in January. She played those numbers several times and finally in May she matched all five main numbers. “I always said we would hit one day,” Rebecca said.
Stranger still is the story of Olga Beno from Nova Scotia, who won a CA$5.3 million (£3.2m) jackpot in an Atlantic Lottery draw in December 2016. The Canadian woman said the winning lottery numbers came to her in a dream – 28 years ago!
Apparently Beno has been playing the same numbers faithfully since May 1989. “I know my numbers by heart, and I thought I saw them on the television screen the evening after the draw, but my eyes aren’t good,” she said. Two days later she saw the same numbers published in a newspaper. She called her sister and told her, “I think I won the lottery!”
If not in a dream, how do you choose your numbers?
There are many ways to select numbers when buying lottery tickets, whether the purchase is made at a retail outlet or online using theLotter, the leading ticket courier service.
Many people select their numbers based on the birthdays, anniversaries, ages, and even phone numbers of family members. Other lottery players consult numerology, pick their favourite numbers or numbers considered unpopular. Many lottery fans stick with the same numbers for years, as Beno did, while others choose random numbers in every draw.
Some lottery players leave the hard work of selecting numbers to the computer, trusting their luck with ‘quick pick’ selection. For example, John and Lisa Robinson of Tennessee purchased four Quick Pick tickets in January 2016 and one of them matched all five main numbers as well as the Powerball. Their prize was a one-third share of Powerball’s world record $1.58 billion jackpot.
According to some media reports, 75% of those who have won Powerball jackpots did so with a Quick Pick ticket.
There are those who say playing the lottery is a bad investment and that the odds are stacked against you. But, they may have missed the point. Playing the lottery is fun. Winning the lottery would make your dreams come true, no matter how you select your numbers!
