When can I offer avocado to my baby?

If you are choosing to baby led weaning your infant, you can offer avocados from six months onwards. In fact, baby can have most foods from six months, apart from whole nuts, honey and foods high in salt/sugar.

How to Cut Avocado for Baby

Avocados are also known as alligator pears and have become really popular in recent years thanks to their status as a ‘superfood’. As well as being great for vision, digestion and a healthy heart, avocados are very versatile and can be blended, mashed, sliced or spread meaning they can be used in a variety of dishes.

If you’re just starting out with baby led weaning and are planning to offer avocado as a single food item, there’s a number of ways you can cut avocado for baby.

1. The scoop and slice

This method for cutting avocado for baby is the way I have always done it. Firstly, you’re going to need a long sharp knife to make the initial cut.

Cut across the avocado lengthways and let your knife hit the stone, before turning it around and cutting through the other side. Once you have a cut through the full length of the avocado, you can twist each side of the fruit until it comes apart.

Carefully use your knife to cut into the stone, wriggle it a little and pull the stone out.

Take a tablespoon and at the edge of the skin and the fruit, scoop the flesh out by moving the spoon along the edge as you scoop.

Once you have each half face down on a chopping board, you can then use your knife to thinly slice the avocado into strips that are the perfect size for your baby to grab and hold.

2. The slice and peel

I recently saw this method on TikTok and I have to admit, I love it! Simply follow the steps above to cut your avocado in half and remove the stone, but instead of scooping the flesh out, simply slice.

Once sliced, the skin should simply peel off from each strip and once again you have the perfect grabbable pieces of avocado for your baby to eat!

3. The time-saving tool method

This nifty tool which costs less than £6 on Amazon not only removes the flesh from the avocado, but it will also remove the avocado pit and slice it too!

We were recently gifted this tool for Christmas and it has been invaluable in getting the stones out quickly and easily.

How to Serve Avocado to Baby

When it comes to serving baby led weaning avocado, the options are endless.

If you are just starting out, many mums choose to offer foods as single items, until baby gets to grip with what baby led weaning is about. In this case you can just serve baby avocado strips as they are on a high chair tray, ready for baby to play with.

If you’re ready to serve more than one food to your baby (and hey, this is totally fine to do from the very start too!), then you could always try mashing avocado and spreading it on toast. It tastes absolutely divine! Cut your toast into strips and let baby go to town. It’s a messy business, but super fun to watch!

What if my baby is struggling to hold the avocado?

When babies start off with the weaning process, it’s a huge learning curve for them, so being able to handle the food and get it to their mouths can be a challenge for many, especially with slippery foods such as avocados.

Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to make avocado easier for your baby to hold:

  1. Leave a bit of the skin on – be careful with this one as the skin can be a choking hazard, but by leaving a portion of the skin on, it’ll make the slice of avocado far easier for your baby to hold. The second method (the slice and peel) will be the perfect way to cut avocado for your baby if you plan to do this.
  2. Coat the avocado in something – try breadcrumbs, desiccated coconut or nut butter. All work really well to make avocado less slippery.

How can I tell if an avocado is ready to eat?

Darker avocados generally mean they’re riper, so have a good look at the colour before cutting into your avocado. Another great way to test if an avocado is ready to eat is by peeling off the cap at the top of the fruit.

If the cap doesn’t peel back easily, it’s too soon to eat it. If you peel it back and see yellow or green – the avocado is in perfect shape to eat!

Finally, give your avocado a good squeeze. If it’s soft, you’re good to go. Struggling to give it a squish? It’s not quite ready yet. The fruit will be hard and difficult to scoop, cut and eat.
