It’s been eleven years since I was a teenager but some of the beauty mistakes I made, even nearly twenty years ago, remain fresh in my memory. I massively cringe when I think of myself strutting around thinking I was the bees knees. Let’s see if you remember committing any of these teenage beauty fails if you were a teenager in the 90s/00s.
Teenage Beauty Fail #1: Abusing Sun-in
I was desperate to have beautiful blonde hair, so whenever we went on holiday I’d beg my mum to buy me Sun-in so my ash blonde locks would go yellow as I was sunbathing. It was all well and good for the first few weeks, but then the dark roots stared to rear their ugly head and there was nothing that could be done apart from to let it grow out over the next three years. #fail Can you believe they still actually sell it?!
Teenage Beauty Fail #2: Ironing my Hair
My friends and I were obsessed with having luscious poker straight locks, but there were no such things as GHDs when we were teenagers. How did we improvise? We had to resort to using an actual iron! Every morning I would dutifully iron my hair with a Morphy Richards iron, using a tea towel as protection. I can’t tell you the number of accidents my friends had! Serious burns to the hands, neck and face and there was even an instance where my best friend dropped her iron on her Mum’s brand new carpet! There were also many instances of hair singeing due to still having slightly damp hair. Despite all of this, people’s hair did look really good though…
Teenage Beauty Fail #3: Overplucking my Eyebrows
I was obsessed with having really thin eyebrows and would take my tweezers to the furry caterpillars every other day. I was petrified of having a monobrow and there was no Youtube in those days to tell me how to pluck them. I wasn’t aware that I could overpluck them and the hair wouldn’t grow back. These days I have to fill in a lot with my pencil and eyebrow pallets. Luckily, these days there is so much decent eyebrow make up, or even Advanced Tricho Pigmentation Treatment to replicate those perfect brows we tweezered away!
Teenage Beauty Fail #4: Wearing Orange Foundation and Too Much Bronzer.
What was the obsession with looking orange? I had no idea about picking the right shade and was desperate to wear as much foundation and bronzer as possible despite probably not needing anything on my face at all, apart from a little concealer. Do you remember those little bronzing balls? They’d turn my little cheeks orange, then I’d inadvertently drop a few and tread them into the carpet. My mum was not a happy bunny and nobody had the heart to tell me I looked like an Oompa Loompa.
Teenage Beauty Fail #5: Fancy Dress for Nights Out
At uni, we loved dressing up for a night out. Forget trying to look cool and sophisticated, I was more interested in wearing crazy hair bands and adding as much glitter as possible to my face. I think I now understand why I spent most of my uni years single! University of Manchester people, who remembers the AU? Wednesday nights were not complete without having a big dance to the Baywatch theme while dressed up as a sailor.
Teenage Beauty Fail #6: Blue Makeup
Blue mascara was a thing when I just turned 13 and I used to lash it on for school discos. Why, oh, why, oh, why? I even had a blue eyeliner pencil that I was still using as a sixteen year old. Every damn day I would dutifully apply my blue eyeliner and strut around school thinking I was looking amazing. #deluded
This post wouldn’t be complete without a couple of embarrassing photos from my teenage years:
