Potato fritters for babies

I absolutely adore making fritters as part of the baby led weaning journey. So simple to prepare and yet so, so versatile. These potato fritters for babies are no exception.

Add any seasonings you like to switch up the flavours, add cheese for extra calcium or serve alongside a healthy dip so baby can practise their ‘dip-dip’ skills. (This is always so super cute!)

Why offer potatoes to your baby?

Babies are constantly learning and always on the go (even before they start crawling and walking!) and need a huge amount of energy to sustain them. Potatoes are a great source of this energy, and they also contain lots of other lovely nutrients too:

  • Folate – builds healthy new cells
  • Iron – helps muscles store and use oxygen
  • Vitamin B6 – helps brain development and builds a strong immune system
  • Zinc – important for healthy growth
  • Vitamin C – supports a healthy immune system
  • Choline – important for the brain
  • Fibre – fantastic for healthy gut development

How to make potato fritters for babies

This super simple recipe is easy to prepare with a few simple steps:

  • Peel and chop up your potatoes into small chunks – the smaller they are, the quicker they’ll boil.
  • Cover in water and boil for 10-15 minutes. Do not add salt to the water, baby doesn’t need it.
  • Once boiled, tip the water away and blend the potatoes down into a puree. I use a hand blender.
  • Add seasonings, egg, flour and combine to form a batter.
  • Spoon the batter into a frying pan that’s heated with a little oil and fry on both sides until browned.

What hand blender do you use?

I use a Russell Hobbs hand blender which is only £12 on Amazon and has been with us now for a good few years. It’s fab for making soups, purees, mashed vegetables or mixing cake batter.

How do you serve this recipe to your baby?

Once the potato fritters have cooled, I cut them into three strips for baby so he can pick them up with his fist and bring them to his mouth.

As baby gets older, I often cut them into small chunks so they can practise developing those fine motor skills and use their pincer grip.

When they reach toddlerhood, I serve with a fork and let them practise stabbing and brining food to their mouths.

I love using Doddl cutlery with my little ones – this ergonomic cutlery is perfect for little hands.

How can you make gluten-free or egg-free potato fritters for babies?

This recipe can be adapted so that it’s gluten-free and egg-free (or both!)

Simply replace the flour with a gluten-free option and to make it egg-free, replace the egg with a flax-egg.

A flaxegg is 1 tbsp of flaxmeal and 2.5 tbsp warm water combined to make something that has an egg-like consistency. I am reliably told this method works well to make fritters egg-free.

What goes well with these potato fritters?

These potato fritters for babies are great served alongside steamed veg, with a healthy dip or simply served on their own for baby to enjoy.

If you wanted to adapt the recipe slightly, you could add a little pureed veg such as sweet potato or carrot or even add different varieties of cheese!
