Weaning Wisdom Wednesdays #7 // IAmCrabstix

Welcome to my guest series Weaning Wisdom Wednesdays. Each week, a guest blogger will feature, either by writing their own original piece about what they’ve learnt during their weaning journeys or by answering my set of questions. This week we are joined by my fabulous friend Nicola from IAmCrabstix. Nicola is a full time working Mum who I have so much respect for. She works so hard and has so much love for her GORGEOUS little boy RLT. Take it away Crabz!

Hi Nic, welcome to Weaning Wisdom Wednesdays. Please start by introducing yourself and your family.

Hiiiii. I am Nicola Crabstix (obvs this is just my superhero name, not my real one).

I am from the North East and I live with my partner Mark, our little boy RLT who is currently nine months old and our cat Orla Kitty.

What method of weaning are you using?

I like to kid myself by saying we are combination weaning, but the reality is, we are doing traditional which is vegetable-led and when I was feeling brave between the age of 6-7 month I gave him the odd carrot stick.

He’s now graduated on to toast, crumpets, wafers, fruit and other things which I would constitute as grown up food.

When did you start weaning and why?

We started when he was five and a half months because we couldn’t eat a meal without him getting very irate that he couldn’t have any.

Talk us through your journey, how did you start, what foods did you use?

I gave him Boots organic porridge on a morning for the first two weeks until he was officially six months old. It said it was suitable from four months. I didn’t like the idea of porridges with powered milk, so ensured he only had ones we could mix with his own milk. He is on the colic/constipation milk, so I didn’t want him getting bunged up with higher levels of lactose than he was used to.

What are baby’s favourite and least favourite foods?

He started off liking anything orange! Sweet potato, carrot etc. We get the biggest sounds of satisfaction when he is eating things such as the Babease pouch which contains pumpkin, coconut milk in a masala sauce!

He doesn’t like the consistency of peas nor will he entertain turkey or beef!

What sort of food does baby eat when you’re out and about?

I can’t cook and I am afraid of what size lumps to give him – so I have used pouches. I know a lot of parents will be disgusted I am not lovingly preparing all of his meals with my own fair hands – but that’s not me.  So he has the same food when we are out that he has at home – either Babease or Ella’s Kitchen pouches. We have recently in the past week introduced a snack, his preference is a carrot wafer.

What highchair do you use? Do you recommend it to other Mums?

I think it is called a Pixi from Mamas and Papas, I wouldn’t recommend it. It looks like an egg, which is cool, but it curves up around the back – if he tries to sit back on it I’m afraid he is going to get curvature of the spine!

What’s your opinion on offering baby fast food?

I wouldn’t give him a mcdonalds because of the salt content, but could you consider a pouch fast food?

What’s been the most challenging aspect of your weaning journey?

Letting him feed himself because my other half has OCD and as soon as food hits the floor I can see a vain popping out of his forehead.

Have you ever received any criticism for your weaning choices?

Not criticism as such but I have been made aware my sister-in-law did everything freshly prepared. She also managed to breastfeed much longer than I did, so I bow down to her superior parenting skills once again.

Do you meal plan or just offer whatever is available in the fridge?

I open the cupboard and pick a colour.

What tools have you bought that have been invaluable?

Erm, spoons and bowls? 😊

If you were to do it all again, what would you do differently?

I’d probably get over myself and try baby led weaning because one of my favourite things is to watch videos of Dex chomping on all of his food like an absolute pro.

If you could give one piece of advice to new Mums who are about to start weaning, what would it be?

Think about what you want your baby to have and what you don’t. Sugars are everywhere, so be mindful of them and there are so many pasta and cereals in with gluten. Does your baby need that stuff?
