Days Out: Martin Mere Wetlands Centre

We were super happy last week to be invited to Martin Mere Wetlands Centre to join them for their Downy Duck weekend.

Martin Mere is located in Tarlscough which is six miles from Ormiskirk and ten miles from Southport. It’s a fantastic day out for kids and adults alike with so many different birds to see and lots to do.

When we arrived, we headed straight to see the baby ducks which were hatching. The eggs are monitored by a webcam which projects exactly what is going on to a big television screen for the public to watch. There was also the option of joining a candling workshop, where they use candles to show you what’s going on inside the egg. Absolutely fascinating.

Luckily, the day we chose to go was dry and we spent hours wandering around the site looking at the many varieties of birds. We purchased a couple of bags of seed to feed the birds and Dexter loved pointing out ones that were particularly colourful or eye catching.

We stopped for some lunch in the restaurant where you will find highchairs for babies and a wide range of drinks, snacks and hot food. We plumped for some freshly cooked chips to go along with the picnic we packed and a couple of hot coffees. The restaurant was lovely and clean with friendly staff who were coping well despite how busy it was.

After lunch we had a wander around the education centre where they were different types of reptiles on display. The whole centre was packed with friendly and knowledgable staff who are happy to tell you all about what is going on and teaching you about the different birds and reptiles.

There is something different going on everyday at Martin Mere so make sure you check out their website to see the different activities they’ve got going on.

Martin Mere can be found at:

Looks like a great day out - we have an obsession with birds at the moment so it would be perfectly suited, if only it weren't QUITE so far for us!!
