Winter is fast approaching. The evenings are drawing in and we’ve already had to start blasting our heating on for a couple of hours a day, thanks to the colder weather that’s been sent our way.
We decorated our lounge last year as soon as we moved into our new house, but kept the stunning engineered wood flooring that the old owners had installed. I’m really happy with the room, but as the months get colder and the evenings darker, it can sometimes feel a little bare and chilly, so I reached out to my fellow bloggers for some tips on cozying and warming up our lounge this winter.
A basket full of throws and cushions
Throws and cushions are great for snuggling into during the colder winter months and can bring a seasonal touch to your home if you choose heavy, dark colours that suit the mood. If you have a leather couch, throws are perfect to sit on to stop you feeling freezing cold and there’s nothing cosier than putting on a festive film, wrapping up in a thick throw and sipping on some hot chocolate is there?
Invest in a log burner
Log burners are a fantastic way to cozy up your lounge and there’s nothing better than settling down on the sofa in front of a real life crackling fire in the middle of winter. Log burners are pretty cheap to run too – you can get logs from local farms or even Home Bargains!
Use candles
Candles not only give out a lovely glow (and a small amount of heat) but smell lovely too. This time of year I always dig out my cinnamon, orange and clove scented candles to really get me in the mood for winter. There’s something about a flickering candle that screams cozy, but if you think they’re a bit dangerous because you have small children, try fake candles which you can now pick up in most major shops.
Buy a shaggy rug
Laminate flooring can feel cold on your toes, so choose a lovely shaggy rug to not only warm up your feet, but the room too. As much as I love our laminate flooring, it can get quite chilly for the kids to play on during the winter months, so a rug is the perfect way to keep them toasty warm and has also been a godsend while Felix has been learning to cruise!
Switch your lighting to lamps
Having the ‘big light’ on can dampen any signs of coziness in your lounge, so to avoid this use lamps to dim the light in the room slightly, creating a really cozy environment. I love a mixture of floor and table lamps and my absolute favourite place to go lamp shopping HAS to be Ikea!
