Today was one of those cold grey days and I just felt like making and devouring a warm soup. This was my first time offering a soup to Dex and to be honest, I was completely terrified of the mess that would come with it! I’ve had a craving for leek and potato soup ever since I purchased a bag of frozen leeks last week to keep in the freezer. Who knew I was such a big fan of the smell and taste of leeks?! Must be my Welsh roots…! This is my recipe for a deliciously creamy leek and potato soup for babies.
Leek and Potato Soup – Perfect for Babies
Soups are a great way of getting your baby to eat lots of healthy nutrients and you can have so much fun watching them make a mess as they try to self feed!
Leeks are full of healthy nutrients that can help protect your baby’s heart, boost their immune systems and help promote a healthy gut!
How to make Leek and Potato Soup
- Heat olive oil in a large sauce pan and add the chopped leeks. Fry for a couple of minutes.
- Make up the veg stock (usually 190ml water per stock cube) then add to the pan, along with another 400ml of water.
- Add the roughly chopped potatoes to the pan, then simmer with the lid on for 20-30 minutes.
- Transfer the soup to a blender and pulse until all the lumps have disappeared.
- Stir in the creme fraiche, then season to taste. (Obviously you will want to avoid adding salt if you are offering this to baby)

Can adults enjoy this sweet potato soup recipe too?
Absolutely! I ate a bowl of this soup whilst Dex was eating his, only for my bowl I added a tiny pinch of salt and some chilli flakes to add a little flavour.
The most important part of baby led weaning is sitting and eating with your little one so that they can see how exactly eating a meal works. That’s why i like to create recipes that’ll not just feed your baby – but feed you too!

How do you serve leek and potato soup to babies?
This soup is so thick that it is easy to pre load a few spoons and place them on baby’s tray. I did this along with offering hunks of bread soaked in the soup.
The thickness of the soup meant things don’t get quite as messy as I had envisaged which is a bonus. Dex couldn’t get enough and I wasn’t fast enough replenishing the spoons on the tray!
Can you batch make this leek and potato soup?
We have plenty of soup left over which can be refrigerated for three days or even frozen, so we will definitely be having this again soon.

I love leek and potato soup, perfect for this time of year! Haven't ever made it but will give this a go. Our nursery feeds them soup quite often and apparently it's always a hit so hopefully he'll think the same at home!! Looks delicious.
