Do you feel as though you are in a career rut? Maybe you want to make a change but you don’t know how to go about doing this. Either way, the first thing that you need to do is make sure that you are actually in a rut so that you can pinpoint what you can do to get out of it properly.
Identify Why you’re In a Rut
The first thing that you need to do is identify why you are in a rut. It may be that you are not being paid enough for what you do or that you just have no passion for the job. You may also find that you do not feel challenged by the role that you have now, or that there are no opportunities for growth within your given organisation. Either way, if any of these statements apply to you then you need to do what you can to try and turn things around. If you don’t then your situation won’t change.
List the Obstacles
Even when you know full well that you are in a rut and you are desperate to make a change, you may find that your mind throws up a lot of objections. You may think that you need to stay in the job you have now because it is secure or because you think that the money is good. Either way, if you can take the time to list all of the objections that you have, then this will help you to look at them much more objectively. You also need to list the things that are stopping you from pursuing a new role, as opposed to just looking at the things that are encouraging you to stay. This could include the fact that you do not have a lot of experience or that you don’t know how to sell yourself when taking an interview. You may also find that your resume needs work or that you have no idea how to write a good cover letter. Either way, you need to write them down so you can find ways to overcome them.
Use Strategic Questions
The next thing that you need to do is ask yourself a number of questions so that you can get yourself into a nice positive mindset. You need to ask yourself what you can do to get out of the rut, and if there is anything you can do to use the skills and experience you have to further your career. List all of the people who might be able to help you with your transition too. If you can do this, then you will soon find that it is possible for you to take actions that will help you to move out of this rut.
Connect with Others
You need to connect with others who have done what you intend to do. You also need to learn how they went about making a change and you need to talk with them about their career trajectories in general. If you can do this, then you will soon find that you are able to make connections and that you can also gather information as well. If you can do this and if you can be open to new information, then this will help you out in the long run. A lot of people choose to go back to college as it gives them the chance to connect with like-minded individuals. If you want to do this, then it would be wise to look into personal statement writing.
Make a Commitment
When you begin to find out what skills you have and what experience you need to try and get out of the rut you are in, you then need to speak with people who may be able to help you. If you can do this, then you will soon find that it is easier than ever for you to start moving forward. Be prepared for your mind to turn positive thoughts into negative ones if things do not go to plan, or if you have someone who is not responding to your request right away. These things happen, but if you can keep on pushing, then you will soon find that things end up becoming easier for you.
Of course, there are many things that you can do to try and turn things around for yourself and if you follow this guide, you will find it easier to boost your income potential as well as your general happiness.
