We all place our children’s health and safety at the top of our list of priorities. We tend to investigate any place they’re spending time in to make sure that it meets our standards. But when’s the last time you took a serious look at your own home? This is the space that our little ones are spending most of their time at the moment, so you should do your utmost to take a look around and make sure that it really is as child friendly and safe as you’d expect from other places they spend time. Here are a few areas to take a look at!
Make Sure Your Smoke Detector Batteries are Working
We all have smoke detectors in our homes. They’re integral when it comes to alerting us if there is smoke or a fire present in our homes. But when’s the last time you checked the batteries in yours? If your smoke detector hasn’t gone off recently, make sure to check that they are still working. If not, change them immediately.
Install a Carbon Monoxide Detector
If you don’t have a carbon monoxide detector, make sure to invest in one as soon as possible. Carbon monoxide is an invisible, scentless and tasteless gas that can prove fatal if breathed in. A carbon monoxide detector will set off an alarm if any carbon monoxide is detected.
Check Your Home for Asbestos
If you live in an older building, there could be asbestos present in your home. In years gone by, people used this as a building material and it can be found in some ceilings, heaters and other aspects of older homes. Unfortunately, it is carcinogenic and potentially extremely dangerous. So, have your home checked and invest in asbestos removal if necessary.
Install CCTV
Burglary, vandalism and other crime can make installing CCTV on the exterior of your property a great investment. A good CCTV system will record all activity taking place directly outside of your property. The main benefit of CCTV is that it will reduce chances of people carrying out any illegal activity on your land or trespassing into your home in the first place. They’ll see that they are being recorded and this acts as a great deterrent. If anyone does commit crime around your property, you’ll have solid evidence that can be used to ensure that they are prosecuted and held accountable for their wrongdoings.
Consider a Home Security System
If you want to go one step further, you might want to consider a home security system. This is a system that will trigger an alarm if anyone enters your property while you are asleep, out of the house, or any other time when the system is set and activated. This can further prevent crime, acting as another great deterrent.
These, of course, are just a few suggestions that can help to get the ball rolling when it comes to making sure that your home is as safe as possible for you and your family!
