The rise of new mums earning a second income

There has been a shift in the way we think about work. The traditional idea that you have one office job for most of your life is slowly fading away, and a more modern and flexible outlook is taking its place.

In this new landscape, it is not unusual to change jobs every couple of years. In fact, it’s quite common to have more than one job at the same time – a recent study has shown that a quarter of all Brits are now earning a secondary income. This is a staggering number, and what’s even more astonishing is that “two thirds of people think it is either the norm, or soon will be”.

This influx of people seeking out additional income has given rise to more and more part-time opportunities.

All of this is great news for mums, especially new mums. Why? Well, a study has shown that 79% of this demographic in particular are favouring part-time or freelance work over returning to full-time employment after maternity leave. And this increase in ‘side hustles’ gives them more options that aren’t your classic nine-to-five.

So, if you’re reading this as a new mum and are sitting there thinking, ‘great, but what ARE these possible opportunities?’, fear not – we’ve got you covered. Check out the sections below for ideas of things you can do as a way to earn money from the comfort of your home.

Use Your Skills and Experience to Earn Online

Having a flexible part time job does not mean you have to become a delivery driver. You can unlock a myriad of opportunities just by opening your laptop and firing up google chrome.

First up is writing. Thanks to tablets, phones and laptops, it’s never been easier to become a content creator. Why not start a blog? Soon-to-be mums are always on the lookout for information and resources.

You’ve already lived through becoming a mum, so you’re in an excellent position to turn your experiences into articles.

Not only will this be a fulfilling pastime, but it will undoubtedly help other mums, and may lead to an income stream. That’s because blogs can make money through advertising and sponsored posts.

Are words not your thing? That’s ok. You could try your hand at ‘partner’ jobs. This is when you help companies distribute their products or services by recommending them to people you know.

Partner jobs are a great way to earn money on your terms – you can work as much as you want, and whenever it suits you the most. They can also be very sociable and a great way to meet people. Best of all, they almost always focus on getting friends or relatives better deals – so you’re helping people and earning money at the same time. Win win!

A great example is the Utility Warehouse opportunity, where Partners help people switch their energy, broadband, mobile, and insurance to UW – not only do they save people money on bills, but they can earn up to £370 every time someone signs up.

Rent Your Property

Similar to the Partner opportunities, another option is to become an AirBnB host. Whether it’s a spare room, second home, or a big garden that can be rented out for parties and functions – all you need is a space.

Again, this can be done when it suits you the most. Maybe you’re going on holiday yourself for a fortnight? You could rent your house for the two weeks you’re away and recoup some of the money you’ll spend on holiday.

Of course, there are many other freelance opportunities out there – which ones have we missed? Are there any that you’ve tried that have worked particularly well? Let us know in the comments!
