When you have a new baby, you want to ensure that their home environment is one that promotes warmth and safety. This is why it is important to make changes prior to their arrival. Even if your baby is already home, you can still take precautionary measures to increase their wellbeing and comfort.

While they may not currently be mobile, it won’t be long until they are crawling or toddling around, which is why forethought is so vital. Something that may seem trivial to you can pose serious threats to an infant.

Home Temperature

The temperature of your home can have a large impact on your baby’s health, happiness, and even their ability to sleep well. You need to make sure that your home is not too cold, as this can cause your baby to feel unwell, or discomfort. Chills can quickly become a serious problem. Yet, likewise, you also want to make sure they do not overheat, especially if wearing thick clothes or blankets. Making sure your heating system is working, and ensuring you have working gas, electric, or SuperSaverOil, will also ensure that the temperature of your home is kept at one which will keep everyone happy and comfortable.

Stairs

If you live in a property that has stairs, these can pose a potentially fatal hazard to young children. Taking your eye off them for even a few minutes could lead to them tripping or falling down the stairs, which may lead to concussion, bruising, broken bones, or even death. This is why it is best that you secure your stairs. It can be beneficial to get into the habit of using stair gates before your child is mobile, as then it will be second nature to you.

You want to make sure that the gate you use is properly fixed to the wall or bannister. You may also find that, as your child grows, you need to change the gate you use, particularly if your little ones have mastered the ability to open it.

First Aid

A first aid kit can be a fantastic tool to keep in your home. This will benefit your baby, as well as the rest of the family. Some examples for contents can be a thermometer to check for any fevers, plasters and other bandages in case of wounds, a cooling pad to try to soothe any bumps, as well as antibacterial cleansing wipes so that you can get any dirt or debris out of wounds.

While it is important to try and prevent injuries, it is highly likely that some will still occur so, by having the necessary tools to hand, you can administer aid and reduce the likelihood of infection. Of course, not all illnesses or injuries can be dealt with in the home, so it is vital that you speak to a medical professional if you have any concerns.

Making your home safe does not stop once your baby grows. Throughout their childhood, you want to make sure that they are kept as protected and comforted as possible. By being cautious now, you can potentially save on some of the injuries that may have occurred in the future.
