I have been eating curries ever since I can remember. From a young age, my parents offered me curries, and it’s been something I have offered in turn to my own children – even when they were babies. This baby curry recipe is perfect for the whole family, from the moment your baby turns six months old!

Why offer curry to your baby?

You might be wondering why offer curry to your baby – after all, aren’t curries spicy? Well, they don’t have to be! Curries can be fragrant and delicious without any heat and they can be jam packed full of healthy ingredients that your baby will love!

Can the whole family enjoy this baby curry recipe?

Absolutely! This recipe is suitable for the whole family, but is it’s predominately a baby curry recipe because it doesn’t contain any salt or chillis.

Feel free to add these baby-unfriendly ingredients once you’ve dished up baby’s portion. Stir in chilli flakes and a dash of salt to add more heat and flavour!

Which fresh ingredients can be swapped for frozen ones?

You can replace many of the fresh ingredients for frozen including:

  • onions
  • peppers
  • ginger
  • any other frozen veg you might want to throw in!

How do you serve this curry recipe to your baby?

When your baby is at the younger end of the weaning scale, you’ve got two options.

If you’re baby led weaning, you can drop the baby curry and rice on their tray and let them have a go at feeding themselves, using their hands.

Dexter started by eating the curry with his hands to using a spoon or a fork by the age of 17 months. We didn’t introduce cutlery until he was around 10 months old and it took him until he was 1.5 to use it confidently.

If you’re traditional weaning, then you can spoon feed this curry to your baby. be sure to mash/puree it depending on what stage your baby is at.

Can this baby curry recipe be made in the slow cooker?

Absolutely! I love using my slow cooker during the winter months to prepare this baby curry recipe so it’s ready and waiting when I return from a long day at the office.

Simply bung all the ingredients into the slow cooker and leave it on low for 6-8 hours.

What slow cooker do you use?

I have this Crock Pot easy-clean slow cooker which has a removable pot which can be bunged into the dishwasher after each use!

Can this baby curry recipe be batch prepared and frozen?

Yes! You can make a big batch of this baby curry recipe and freeze it in small pots to serve whenever you like!

I recommend storing it for no longer than one month in the freezer and making sure it is thoroughly defrosted in the fridge for 24 hours before serving to baby.

What if I’m dairy-free?

You can replace the yoghurt with a dairy free option such as coconut milk or indeed remove it entirely!

Prep Time 10 minutes
Total Time 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • 600g chicken
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • frozen or fresh ginger (around 1cm worth of fresh or a teaspoon of frozen)
  • 1 onion (sliced)
  • 1 pepper (chopped)
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 5 cardamom pods
  • 2 tbsp cumin
  • 2 tbsp ground coriander
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp garlic granules
  • 1 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1 tsp chilli flakes, or one fresh chilli (optional)
  • 500g passata
  • 200ml yoghurt
  • chopped fresh coriander

Instructions

    1. Heat oil in a wok over medium heat and add the sliced onions. Fry them until they start to brown.
    2. Meanwhile, mix all of your spices together in a small bowl - ginger, coriander, cumin, the contents of cardamom pods, cinnamon, garlic, ground black pepper and chilli flakes if using (not advisable for baby - these can be added separately at the end).
    3. Cut your chicken up into small chunks. Pour half of the contents of your spice mix over the chicken and coat well.
    4. Pour the other half of the spice mix and use a wooden spatula to mix the spices with the onions, being carefui not to let them catch and burn at the bottom of the pan.
    5. Add the chicken and peppers to the pan and let it brown for a couple of minutes.
    6. Pour in the passata or chopped tomatoes and crank the heat up until it's bubbling away. Pop a lid on the wok and leave to simmer for twenty minutes, stirring occasionally.
    7. Before serving, stir in the yoghurt and a handful of chopped fresh coriander.
    8. Serve alongside rice, naan breads and popadums.
    9. Be sure to allow the curry to cool completely before offering it to baby.
