Pea fritters for babies

I absolutely adore making fritters as part of the baby led weaning journey. So simple to prepare and yet so, so versatile. These pea fritters for babies are no exception.

Add any seasonings you like to switch up the flavours, add cheese for extra calcium or serve alongside a healthy dip so baby can practise their ‘dip-dip’ skills. (This is always so super cute!)

Why offer peas to your baby?

Peas are such a fun food to offer your baby. Many mums worry that baby will choke on them, but they can easily be squished to prevent them being a choking hazard – just as you would with blueberries!

Peas are a great way for baby to practise their pincer skills. Tip some squished peas on their highchair and watch them try and pick them up to feed themselves with their thumb and finger. Hours of fun!

Peas are a great source of:

  • Magnesium – helps keep the heart beating and helps prevent tooth decay
  • Phosphorus – grows and maintains healthy tissue
  • Iron – supports proper neurological development
  • Vitamin C – maintains a healthy immune system
  • Fibre – supports digestive health
  • Protein – essential for growth

How to make pea fritters for babies

This super simple recipe is easy to prepare with a few simple steps:

  • Add peas to your bowl (if using frozen peas, let it sit in boiling water for five minutes or so first)
  • Add flour and egg and mix until a batter is formed
  • Heat a little oil in a pan then spoon the pea batter into the frying pan creating small fritters
  • Cook on each side for 2 minutes

How do you serve this recipe to your baby?

Once the pea fritters have cooled, I cut them into three strips for baby so he can pick them up with his fist and bring them to his mouth.

As baby gets older, I often cut them into small chunks so they can practise developing those fine motor skills and use their pincer grip.

When they reach toddlerhood, I serve with a fork and let them practise stabbing and brining food to their mouths.

I love using Doddl cutlery with my little ones – this ergonomic cutlery is perfect for little hands.

How can you make gluten-free or egg-free pea fritters for babies?

This recipe can be adapted so that it’s gluten-free and egg-free (or both!)

Simply replace the flour with a gluten-free option and to make it egg-free, replace the egg with a flax-egg.

A flaxegg is 1 tbsp of flaxmeal and 2.5 tbsp warm water combined to make something that has an egg-like consistency. I am reliably told this method works well to make fritters egg-free.

What goes well with these pea fritters?

These pea fritters for babies are great served alongside steamed veg, with a healthy dip or simply served on their own for baby to enjoy.

If you wanted to adapt the recipe slightly, you could add a little pureed veg such as sweet potato or carrot or even add different varieties of cheese!
