Dexter has been obsessed with communication toys since he was a young baby. He’s played endlessly over the years with pretend phones, my actual phone, toy radios and tablets, so you can imagine how happy he was when I introduced him to The Discovery Digital Walkie Talkies.
Discovery make a wide range of learning toys and these particular walkie talkies are in fact a STEM product encouraging the learning of science, technology, engineering and mathematics through play. These subjects are crucial to help us develop our kids into worldy, intelligent adults and these walkie talkies are a prime example of how we can use seemingly simple toys to encourage learning based play.
Features and benefits of The Discovery Walkie Talkies
Walkie talkies have been used for years for communication by the military, police and fire service – although these days many people use them for fun too. They work using radio waves – when you talk into them, the walkie talkie converts your voice into a radio signal which it then transmits to the other device which one received, turns it back into speech again. You can see now where the science and technology comes into play!

The Discovery Walkie Talkies are super simple to use and are suitable for children aged 4+
The key features are:
- 3 channels with LED display
- LED torch for use in the dark
- A ringing alert button to let the receiver know you plan to communicate with them
- A belt clip so you can keep the walkie talkie close to you when not in use
- The ability to transmit messages up to 3km away.
What did we love?
The Discovery Walkie Talkies are easy to set up. Simply add three AAA batteries into each device and switch on using the ON/OFF button. You can call the other walkie talkie which will alert the recipient you want to talk before finally pressing the talk button to transmit speech.
The call button is a great feature to alert the other recipient meaning you will never miss out on a call if the walkie talkie is attached to your pants and you’re in a busy environment.
Even though Dex is only three and a half, so a little younger than the recommended age for use, it didn’t take him long to work out how to use them. It took a little practise that we needed to take turns to talk, unlike when you use a phone, but it was a great learning curve for him in turn taking.

Dex loves the LED torch and it will come in really useful if out camping or using them on a dark evening.
The instructions come with lots of play ideas to encourage STEM based learning and role play which fuelled his imagination.
The size of the walkie talkies are perfect for little hands and the buttons are simple enough for a young child to grasp the understanding of how they work.
They are robust and although the instructions advise not to drop or bang them unnecessarily, as not to cause damage to the internal components, accidents can and do happen, and we have found the walkie talkies to be very durable.
