Why offer strawberries to your baby?

Strawberries are not only delicious but also offer numerous health benefits for babies. Packed with essential nutrients, these juicy berries can contribute significantly to a baby’s growth and development. Key nutritional elements found in strawberries include:

  • Vitamin C: Strawberries are rich in vitamin C, which helps strengthen the immune system and aids in the absorption of iron. This vitamin also plays a crucial role in collagen formation, promoting healthy skin, gums, and connective tissues.
  • Fibre: Strawberries are a good source of dietary fibre, which aids in digestion and helps prevent constipation. Introducing fibre-rich foods like strawberries early on can establish healthy eating habits and support a baby’s overall digestive health.
  • Antioxidants: Strawberries are bursting with antioxidants like anthocyanins, which give them their vibrant red color. These antioxidants help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals and contribute to overall health and well-being.
  • Folate: Strawberries contain folate, a B-vitamin that is essential for the development of the baby’s brain and spinal cord. Adequate folate intake is crucial during pregnancy and early childhood to support healthy growth and reduce the risk of neural tube defects.

How do you makes these baby led weaning strawberry pancakes?

Start by cracking an egg in a bowl and whisking it until it becomes frothy.

Next, add plain flour and a half a teaspoon of baking powder.

Pour in the milk slowly, combining with a fork or whisk until a batter forms.

Finely chop the strawberries, or create a puree by pulsing them in a blender, then drop into the batter, using a spoon to fold them in.

Heat some oil or butter in a saucepan on high heat. Once melted, reduce the heat to medium-high.

Use a tablespoon batter to create mini pancakes or use half a ladle to make medium sized ones that can be cut into three strips.

Once the edges brown, carefully lift using a spatula and flip.

Stack up the strawberry pancakes while you make the rest.

Can you make this recipe with frozen strawberries?

You sure can! Sometimes it can be more expensive to get hold of fresh strawberries, especially during the winter months and it’s much more cost effective to buy frozen strawberries.

Often frozen strawberries can be quite chunky and will not thaw easily within the batter so I would recommend leaving them to thaw for a short while before pulsing them with a food processor or hand blender, otherwise you risk a potential choking hazard for your baby.

How to make dairy free strawberry pancakes for baby

I am often asked if my recipes can be made dairy free and in this case, it certainly can be. Simply switch the milk for a dairy-free alternative. You can use:

  • Oat milk
  • Soy milk
  • Breast milk
  • Dairy-free formula
  • Almond milk

Simply follow the recipe below and add the dairy-free milk of your choice. Voila dairy free strawberry pancakes for baby!

How do you serve these pancakes to your baby?

How you serve these strawberry pancakes depends on how old your baby is.

With younger babies, I tend to cut the pancakes into three or four strips so they can pick them up with their fist and bring them easily to their mouths.

With older babies, I’ll either cut into two strips or just serve the pancake whole so they can have at it!

You know your baby best, but strips are always a great way when baby is first starting out with baby led weaning.

Cutting the pancake into smaller chunks will help them develop their pincer grip as they get towards nine months and beyond.

If you’re serving these strawberry pancakes to a toddler or older kid, you might want to add a little Nutella on top of the stack with some sliced strawberries. Yum!

How do you store these strawberry pancakes for baby?

This baby led weaning strawberry pancake recipe makes eight mini pancakes, so chances are, you won’t have any pancakes left to store if you’re eating them together as a family. If however you’re making them for baby alone, they’ll probably only manage one or two, so you’re gonna wanna store the rest.

These strawberry pancakes are good in the fridge for three days or can be frozen for up to a month. Store them in an air tight container or wrap them in a sandwich or freezer bag to keep them protected.
